The inventors developed a process to control fermentation for production of renewable fuels and chemicals. Using the process, microorganisms can be isolated and improved for production of desired chemicals, and efficiencies of production of desired chemicals are greatly enhanced. Fuels produced include: methane, alcohols (ethanol, 1-butanol), and hydrocarbons (e.g. hexane and octane).
